Anomic Aphasia Therapy for Speech & Writing

Anomia impairs word-retrieval (recalling words or names) and usually affects both speech & writing . The programs below (for speech & writing) are listed in order of difficulty.

Aphasia Tutor 1: Words -For learning letters & words and written naming. Also available in an Out Loud version that speaks the letters and words in a human voice.
Aphasia Tutor 2: Sentences -Sentence completion and word retrieval. Also available in an Out Loud version that speaks the sentences aloud in a human voice.
Sights'n Sounds 1 - Verbal naming (spoken word retrieval) and oral reading at the word level.
Numbers'n Sounds - Reading numbers aloud.
Synonyms, Antonyms, & Homonyms - Matching and written word retrieval.
Sights'n Sounds 2 - For speech production and articulation at the sentence level. Records patient's voice and plays it back along with a model sentence for comparison.
SentenceShaper 2 helps those with aphasia bridge the gap from being able to say only single words or phrase to speaking in sentences and telling stories. This is a great sequel to Sights'n Sounds 2 above.

Reading Comprehension Therapy Software

Aphasia Tutor 1: Words +Out Loud - Letter and word level reading comprehension. Speaks the letters and words aloud in a human voice for extra help.
Categories and Words - Word and phrase level reading comprehension. Patient must choose which word does or does not belong with the others.
Aphasia Tutor 2: Sentences +Out Loud -Sentence level reading comprehension. Reads the sentences aloud in a human voice for extra help.
Understanding Questions and Understanding Questions +Out Loud for sentence-level reading comprehension.
Direction Following (Following written directions at the phrase level up to the paragraph level.) For greater assistance, the +OutLoud version speaks the directions and the feedback (hints).
Aphasia Tutor 3: Story Reading - Paragraph and story level reading.
Aphasia Tutor 4:Functional Reading (recipes, T.V. guide, schedules, etc.)

Less frustration. More effective therapy.

One major obstacle to recovery is challenging the patient without frustrating them. If it's too challenging they won't be able to finish the exercises and become frustrated. If it's not challenging enough they won't retain what they are learning and may become bored.

The Bungalow programs do more than simply grade the patient and show the correct answer. If the patient answers incorrectly, they usually get a hint (perhaps an explanation of what they did wrong, or the first letter of the answer). These hints, combined with many different skill levels (as many as 200) in each program allows patients to work a more challenging level without becoming frustrated.
