Reader Response"Just want to thank your newsletter I received here in Mexico City. I enjoyed it very much and found it interesting the poem is great. All this information I put it on a new folder in my office, after printing it that says : " Neuro noticias para afasicos de Clay Nichols " So the persons that bring my patients to therapy love it and instead of reading magazines, they read their NeuroNews. Have a great day !" Sincerely, - Alejandra Jimenez O'Farell, speech therapist Mexico City, Mexico
Update on Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) treatment for stroke "After my six months of hyperbarics, I cannot find any longterm carryover. But it really helps me temporary with speech for a day. If I had the money I would buy one for home. This in turn helped when I did biofeedback (Neurofeedback) with speech. Still continuing the Bio, while maintaining that the goal is helping my brain heal faster. All in all my speech has somewhat improved, but not enough to warrant the cost. Oh, well. Still continuing speech therapy at SFSU." - Albert Downs, stroke survivor
2. On The Web Muscle Tone (spasticity) defined in *english* http://www.wemove.org/spa_pat.htmlWhen I first heard the term "tone" I thought it was a good thing. Everyone is always working out to get more muscle tone. But, sadly, muscle tone isn't always a pleasant condition. Too much muscle tone is called "spasticity". What is spasticity? Spasticity is a neurological condition causing an abnormal increase in muscle tone that occurs when that muscle is stretched. Spastic muscles are resistant to the normal stretching that occurs during use, and may remain abnormally contracted for long periods. Who gets spasticity? Spasticity can occur in neurological disorders that damage parts of the motor pathways, those regions of the nervous system that control voluntary movements. The most common disorders leading to spasticity are cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, stroke, and traumatic brain injuries, such as from lack of oxygen, physical trauma, hemorrhage, or infection. http://www.strokesoftware.com/download/directbeta.exeNew Version Improvements : - Easier to use with feedback from sound-effects for lifting and dropping shapes.
- Intervention provides helpful spoken hints, like "you've already moved that shape" if the patient tries to repeat a move. (We found that some patients, especially those with brain injuries, would forget where in an exercise they were and continue to repeat the previous exercise)
This new version is still being tested. If you have questions, please email Clay@BungalowSoftware.com
I get a lot of calls from caregivers coping with the chaos of stroke recovery. These caregivers carry a heavy load, between caring for the survivor, taking over the survivor's home chores, and (in some cases) providing speech & language practice. We can help with the speech & language practice, but a lot happens very quickly and it's easy for a caregiver to be overwhelmed. These caregivers find it helpful when I explain a bit about the recovery process and what's going on. This excellent web site covers a lot of what I tell caregivers. Topics include:
- How Stroke Effects People
- Preventing Another Stroke
- What Happens During Rehabilitation
- Getting The Most Out of Rehabilitation
- Going Home
5. Clinician's Corner ASHA 2000 Presentations
Terri Nichols, the speech therapist behind the Bungalow Software therapy programs, made a presentation in Washington DC on USING COMPUTERS FOR APHASIA THERAPY. Her notes from that presentation are available on the web at: http://www.StrokeSoftware.com/asha2000/
6. Humor and Inspiration In honor of our newly inaugurated president: Presidential Bumperstickers[Please don't take these too seriously. The intent here is humor, not political commentary -Clay] "Those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything." -Joseph Stalin Don't Blame Me - I voted for Gore... I Think UNPRESIDENTED! If God Meant Us to Vote, He Would Have Given Us Candidates What popular vote? I voted - Didn't matter My parents retired to Florida and all I got was this lousy President DON'T THROW AWAY YOUR VOTE........LET KATHERINE HARRIS DO IT FOR YOU One person, one vote (may not apply in certain states) I DIDN'T VOTE FOR HIS DADDY, EITHER IT AIN'T OVER 'TIL YOUR BROTHER COUNTS THE VOTES The election can't be broken. We just fixed it. The last time somebody listened to a Bush, folks wandered in the desert for 40 years Campaign spending: $184,000,000. Having your little brother rig the election for you: Priceless. ___________________________________________ SUBSCRIBING ___________________________________________ SUBSCRIBING Subscribe@BungalowSoftware.com with "subscribe newsletter" in the subject.
