__________________________________________________ Reader Response SINGING THERAPY We got a lot of feedback on "Singing TherapY". I saw a guy at my husband's therapy who could not speak. In fact, I thought he was asleep in his wheelchair most of the time. Until the therapist started singing The Marine's Hymn. He joined right in and after they sang the first verse together, he said loud and clear, "There's more." And then he sang the second verse. -Cheers! Joyce – TX Jay does try to sing and he can get some of the words. He can finish old saying or nursery rhymes. He can repeat just about any word you say. He just can't find the first sound of the words he wants. I'm going to the for your newsletter and they will probably tell me how to receive it, but in case they don't can you tell me. -Lynn Our speech pathologist (Terri Nichols) had this to add: "This treatment approach can be a great way to get someone started back to talking, if they have very little speech at all. Its only drawback is often a person's reluctance to carry this melodic speech pattern over into everyday conversation." Got a question? Found something helpful? Write me and maybe you'll get YOUR 15 seconds of fame!! -Clay Nichols, Editor. clay@BungalowSoftware.com On The Web STROKE TREK
I know what you’re thinking: "Eegads! Did Captain Kirk (aka William Shatner) have a stroke during a Priceline commercial? No, this isn’t about STAR Trek, it’s about a trek to discover how stroke survivors are treated outside the US. For those of you have been following Greg Constantine's trip about the world, in search of how stroke survivors are treated outside the U.S., his newest installment (from Central Asia) is available at: Featured Program DIRECTION FOLLOWING PLUS http://www.BungalowSoftware.com/directions.htmThis is a great program for working on: - Auditory Comprehension
- Short term memory.
- Attention and concentration
Gives the user instructions (verbally and/or in writing). As the user executes them, the program provides appropriate feedback, such as "correct, or "you are moving the wrong shape", "you are moving the shape to wrong location"). NEW VERSION AVAILABLE We have a new version still in testing, which you can download. It’s got improved sound effects and feedback which make it much easier (and more fun!) to use. STROKE CAREGIVER DISCUSSION LISTS http://www.strokenetwork.org/cgi/privacyagreement.htm This is an excellent collection of email discussion lists for stroke caregivers.
